Question

I held the shares for a number of months, should I not be entitled to part of the dividend payment?

Answer

To be entitled to any dividend on the shares you must own them on the ex-dividend date.  This is the standard procedure throughout the industry.  An exception to this would be Gilt stock, for example, which pays interest that is calculated daily.
