What is an Initial Public Offering (IPO)?

An IPO is a company's first offer to sell stock to the public. This is different to a placing which is an issue of new shares to the market by an existing company; with a placing the company normally approaches the investors directly to offer participation.

Both IPOs and placings are always facilitated on a best endeavours basis.
